How To Get Yourself A Free IPhone

The latest craze for those clever minded ‘internauts’ is free electronic goodies in the form of Christmas candy items such as iPhones, iPods, HDTV’s, Playstation 3, Xbox 360s, digital cameras, Tomtoms etc. The type of goods listed reflects in no small part the target audience; young people who want the latest gizmos and gadgets and are web mobile. When affiliate marketing starts to catch on in the middle aged community and the silver surfers, expect the type of gifts offered to change substantially.

Affiliate Marketing - how it works

Affiliate marketing is a clever way to get people to sign up to what you are offering. The most common form is google ads which appear as hyperlinks next to the google search that you just performed. When these links are clicked, a commission is paid to the person hosting the link either when someone clicks on the link, or when they buy something from the site. Typically this is small, but in the case of many sites, they can be substantially higher.

How do these sites make money and still give away iPhones and PS3s?

Because of the way that sites like kudosnetwork and freebiejeebies (see below) are structured. The reason they can give you so much more is that most everyone who signs up wants to get an iPhone for themselves, and so it’s not just 18 referrals that you get, it’s the 18 referrals that each of the 18 people that you referred go out and get. That’s 324, and if all of those people want an iPhone, and get one, that’s 5832 customers all for the cost of 19 iPhones paid out, and so on it goes. As you can see, in a very short space of time, the numbers of people, and hence the income grows exponentially, and they can afford to honour their promise.

Advertising as we know it is changing form. This is one of the new forms. It is targeted specifically, and it involves you the consumer, doing the legwork, incentivised by the shiny techno-goodies they are offering you. It’s not technically ‘free’, it involves some time, one trial, and a lot of willing friends to help you over the line.

What’s in it for the middleman, the website owner?

They make a commission for everyone who takes out a promotion. They pass on some of this to you. As you are doing the legwork, you are identifying the people and persuading them to sign up; ruling out those who it would be wasted on. You are filtering out, through your knowledge, those who would never sign up. Effectively, you are doing the donkey-work, and the site owner is just sitting there and taking his cut. So as you can see, there’s quite a lot in it for him.

But if everyone completed their referrals, would the site lose money?

Theoretically if they gave away iPhones to everyone, then they might make a loss, but as is always the case, not everyone makes it to the number they need to get their free gift; only achieving a couple of referrals or none at all. They have contributed to the list of people signed up, yet have received nothing in return. It all balances out in the end. If it doesn’t, the number of referrals required per item goes up to reflect how savvy the customers are being, or how much revenue the site is receiving. In short they are not likely to lose out as long as the advertisers are happy, and as far as we can tell, they are.

And what about the advertisers? If everyone cancelled their free trials, would they not lose out?

Possibly, if we were living in an ideal world, but people are people, and there’s a finely balanced pool out there who all behave differently. Do differently it’s almost predicable. Many will take out free trials and cancel them, many more will forget, and some will actually enjoy and use the service they signed up for. The companies who advertise get an opportunity to get you interested in their product, and if they win, they get a customer.

So does this affiliate marketing work?

Yes. Absolutely. And for everyone involved. Just have patience and determination and you will get there. If you don’t believe me, have a look on the web and see for yourself. The internet is plastered with examples of success stories of affiliate marketing. The question is, what have you got to lose by giving it a go?
